Here is What You Should Know About London's New Year’s Eve Fireworks
August 21st 2017, is an important date in the history of London. It was the day that Big Ben had to stop completely for renovations to begin. Suddenly the city was without those iconic chimes every hour and will continue to be until mid-2021.
There are only two days of the year that are exempt when it comes to Big Ben being silent, and one of them happens to be the one day of the year where hundreds of thousands of us descend upon the banks of the Thames to keep a close eye on the clock.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks are one of the world’s most popular ways to ring in the new year. Are you planning on coming down to London to join in with the thousands for the big countdown and need to know all the essential information? And do you need to stay somewhere close by but not too close to all the noise?
With Park International close by, you have direct access to all the action and a luxury room to come back to and cosy up in after a chilly night out. Here is everything you need to know about New Year’s Eve down by the Thames.
What are the London NYE Fireworks?
They are the official event run by the London council that takes place on the south and north bank of the Thames with live fireworks on the stroke of midnight.
Where is the event located?
Pretty much both sides of the river are chock a block on the night, and specific zones are classified as being part of the event. Essentially anywhere from Lambeth Bridge up to Blackfriars bridge is part of the action. You can view a full map here.
How much do tickets for the fireworks cost?
There is a flat ticket price of £10 regardless of what zone you’ll be in. Your ticket only gets you access to your specific area and when buying tickets you’ll be told exactly where you’ll be.
When does it all kick-off?
Everyone doesn’t just rush down to the river at 11.45 to get a good spot. Things kick off from 9 pm with live music and DJs performing to the crowd.
How long do the London NYE fireworks last?
The official running time for the fireworks is 12 minutes from the stroke of midnight.
Will it be cold?
Oh yes! Even with everyone huddled together, the night is one of the coldest of the year. Anyone going should wrap up accordingly and get their thermals on too.
How do I get to the fireworks from Park International?
Park International is ideally placed to get you in and out of the action without having to walk for miles.
Right across the road from the hotel is Gloucester Road tube station. The Circle and District lines run through it, meaning you can quickly get to Westminster Station, Embankment and Temple in 15 minutes.
Also, a good thing to know when travelling; for a few hours after midnight, the tube is completely free for anyone to use. You don’t need a ticket so you can hop on and off without any problems.
