Glasgow University
Founded in 1451, Glasgow University is the second-oldest university in Scotland after St Andrews and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. Former pupils and staff of the University include many famous names such as physicist Lord Kelvin, engineer James Watt, the actor Gerard Butler, Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon, two British Prime Ministers and seven Nobel laureates amongst others. Research is at the heart of the operations of the University as it is labelled as a ‘research powerhouse’, making its teaching quality to be ranked in the top 10 of universities in the United Kingdom.
Visit The Hunterian Museum
Tourists to the city often flock to the visitor attractions around the University in the west end of the city. The most popular of these is the Hunterian Museum which features remarkable displays bequeathed by William Hunter in the 1700s and which were left to the alumni of the University. Today his collections have been added to by other donations to the museum and feature striking artefacts from Roman Scotland, scientific and surgical instruments, anatomy, ancient Egyptian artefacts and much more fascinating objects. You can find these in the large half within the George Gilbert Scott buildings which form part of the university in the Gilmorehall area of the west end.
The Mackintosh House
A must-stop during your visit to the area is The Hunterian Art Gallery – this contains houses one of the most important collections of the work of world-renowned architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Works by his wife, Margaret are also on display here.
The Mackintosh House showcases almost precise interior aspects of the couples Glasgow home. Here you can see a layout of a near replica of the interiors with some of the original fixtures, decoration and fittings including furniture which have been preserved. Note the light and window aspects when you visit – these have been places in nearly the exact location as the original would have been to depict the designers living environment which was years ahead of their time in the early 1900s.
How to get there
