A MODERNIST WONDERLAND

The best way to see Barcelona's astounding architectural heritage is on foot. Step outside your apartment hotel accommodation and turn left down Carrer de Sancho de Ávila until you reach Avinguda Meridiana. Turn right and in 4 minutes, reach the Marina metro station. Take the metro to Passeig de Grácia and you're only a short walk up the road from two of Gaudi's most notable works, Casa Milá and Casa Batlló. To see La Sagrada Familia, take the metro northward two stops to Sagrada Familia. It's best to book your tickets online as slots are by time and the queues can be extremely long.

GOING GOTHIC

Despite its name, most of the buildings framing the labyrinthine cobblestone laneways of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter date back to the early 19th and 20th centuries. The area features a wealth of dining options night and day, as well as boutique shopping, small bars and the must-see Picasso Museum on Carrer de Montcada, featuring many of the artist's better-known Cubist works.

The area doesn't really get going until around midday, so it's best to plan your afternoon and evening activities accordingly. An excellent place for lunch is La Paradeta on Carrer Comercial. This family-friendly local eatery serves up fresh seafood that you order by weight. It goes into the kitchen and comes out tasting amazing. Spend the afternoon at the Picasso Museum. In the evening, head over to the area around the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar and grab a table at El Chigre, a charming tapas place serving delightful Catalan cuisine. As the night settles in, cruise the laneways exploring the many small bars sampling creative cocktails and chatting with people from all over the world.

THE HOME OF FC BARCELONA

With a seating capacity of over 99,000, the stadium is the largest in Europe. La Liga's annual season generally runs between August and May, so there are plenty of opportunities to catch a game during the season.
