Riyadh is a vibrant city that is constantly evolving as it blends culture and history with modern skyscrapers
and innovative design. All across the city there are new restaurants, attractions and reasons to linger in the Saudi capital. From dining to shopping, heritage, and hiking, here are 7 of the best things to do in Riyadh:
As Saudi Arabia’s largest zoo, Riyadh Zoo is one of the exciting things to do in the city, whether you are visiting for business or pleasure. The zoo, spanning 55 acres, is home to over 1500 animals from 40 species. Witnessing tigers, monkeys, reptiles and more, all in terrains that replicate their natural habitats, will make your trip a memorable one.
For guests of Fraser Suites Riyadh, the hotel is conveniently located a 20-minutes’ drive from the zoo making a day out easy and fun. The Riyadh Zoo makes for the perfect family day out or an excellent thing to do for business travellers looking to take a break from their busy schedule.
If you are looking for unusual things to do in Riyadh during your visit and want to experience some of the nature in the area, a trip to Heet Cave is well worth it. Saudi Arabia is home to many amazing caves, some of which are ideal for exploring, and what sets Heet Cave apart from other caves is that it houses an underground lake.
The cave is located at the face of Mount Al Jubayl in the small village of Wadi As Sulay and is less than 45-minutes' drive from our Fraser Suites Riyadh hotel apartment. Visit this beautiful sight, and if you are interested in cave diving, this is the place to do so. However, make sure you are either an experienced diver or are with tour guides who will provide you with the correct equipment.
Experience the Saudi culture and mingle with the locals at Al Bujairi Square. Sample Arabian cuisine with a variety of restaurants and coffee shops to choose from, this area is vibrant and excellent for spending an afternoon or evening after a busy day of work or sightseeing. If you happen to be there on a Thursday night, don’t miss the traditional sword-dancing performance. The show starts at 9pm and is a great addition to an evening out.
The National Museum of Saudi Arabia is undoubtedly the top museum to visit in Riyadh, offering comprehensive insights into the history of Saudi Arabia. Spread across two expansive floors, it takes approximately 1-2 hours to explore fully, making it an excellent destination when considering things to do in Riyadh.
It's highly recommended to visit the museum on your first day in Riyadh to gain a deeper understanding of the Kingdom's history and the religion of Islam.
If you are looking for cultural things to do in Riyadh, the Al Raijhi Grand Mosque, one of the area’s most beautiful and iconic buildings, is a must-visit to immerse yourself in Saudi culture. As the largest mosque in Riyadh, it is breath-taking and is one of the most monumental establishments in the city. However, this incredibly magnificent structure, which translates Friday prayers into seven languages, is more than just a mosque.
It is home to two libraries, offers several courses including forensic science and holds up to 18,000 people in the men’s hall. Guests of Fraser Suites Riyadh can reach Al Rajhi Grand Mosque in less than 20-minutes by car. After a long day of sightseeing, retreat to the hotel and enjoy a delicious meal at the onsite restaurant. Enjoy your meal on the outdoor terrace while overlooking the swimming pool – the perfect end to a long day.
Looking for adventurous things to do in Riyadh? You can head out of town and get behind the wheel of an ATV as you drive up and down the distinct red sand dunes. Several companies operate a service, so if you’re staying with us here at Fraser Suite Riyadh, the concierge staff can help you plan the activity.
We do advise that you go either in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense.
Discover the rich history of Riyadh and Saudi Arabia at Masmak Fort, one of Riyadh's top attractions. Admission is free, making it a great thing to do in the city for history enthusiasts and curious travellers alike. Explore the fortress's ancient corridors, marvel at its exhibits of traditional weaponry and artifacts, and immerse yourself in the kingdom's cultural heritage. Don't miss the chance to experience this iconic landmark during your time in Riyadh!
Across the road from the fort is Deerah Souq, one of the best representations of the bazaar culture that isn't as commonly seen nowadays. Take your time to explore the stalls and discover a variety of items. Don’t worry if you aren’t very good at haggling with the merchants; you'll find plenty of quaint souvenirs and hand-made gifts here that are truly unique.
In our opinion, one of the top things to do in Riyadh is visiting the Kingdom Tower around dusk for a fantastic experience.
Taking the elevators all the way up to the 99th floor, you’ll get arguably the best view of the city. The sunset is usually around 6:30pm during the summer months, so getting to spend time watching the sun go down and the city begins to light up is the perfect photo opportunity.
Experience the best day trip from Riyadh with a visit to the Edge of the World. While you can drive yourself there as a tourist, remember that once you leave the main road, it's just desert, so caution is advised. Alternatively, you can join a group tour for a carefree experience!
Departing from the North of Riyadh, you'll be taken into the desert by bus. At the Edge of the World, you'll have plenty of time to explore and capture stunning photos. After watching the sunset, enjoy a BBQ dinner at the Riyadh Hiking camp, where you can chat with fellow travellers over music and shisha. But the fun doesn't stop there – take a ride on quad bikes and explore an underground cave for a truly memorable experience. This exciting trip from Riyadh is definitely worth adding to your list of things to do in the city!
