Does your youngster love trains? If yes, this is the activity for them! The Parkeisenbahn Auensee in Leipzig, opened in 1951, is a miniature railway operated by children and teenagers. Eight coaches provide space for up to 130 passengers during a ten-minute train ride around Auensee Lake.
The church of St. Thomas (Thomaskirche), a 500-year-old sanctuary where Johann Sebastian Bach composed and performed many of his works, is worth seeing as well (file this in the "your kids may not understand now but will thank you later" category). If you're looking for something a bit closer to Leipzig, take a day trip to Halle an der Saale which is only about 30 minutes away by train. Halle is known for its beautiful historic centre and Marktplatz, as well as its excellent museums.
There are also plenty of great restaurants in Leipzig that offer family-friendly menus. A few of our favourites include the Ratskeller Leipzig, a traditional German restaurant located in the cellar of Leipzig City Hall, and the India House, an Indian restaurant with excellent curries and naan breads.
No trip to Leipzig would be complete without a visit to the Bach Museum Leipzig, which is dedicated to the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The museum is located in the historic Thomaskirche, where Bach himself served as music director for 27 years. The museum features interactive exhibits and displays of Bach's original manuscripts, as well as a multimedia theatre.
There are also plenty of other great museums in Leipzig for kids to explore, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the German Museum of Technology and the Natural History Museum.
Leipzig's impressive Town Hall, which dates back to the 14th century, is also worth a visit. The building features an ornate Gothic facade and a towering tower that offers excellent views over the city.
