What would a trip to Germany be without getting a real taste of authentically made local and craft beer in Hamburg?
While this part of the world may be known for Oktoberfest and traditional stein style beer, the city has grown in recent years and now has a thriving craft beer scene. We have beers ranging from special taps in our beer halls to microbreweries and craft beer bars offering up unique flavours and tastes you’ll only find here.
Looking for an authentic Hamburg Brewery tour and experience? Here are our picks of the best breweries in Hamburg.
Some of the best breweries in Hamburg:
At the time of writing, we’re almost coming up on Gröninger Privatbrauerei being open for 300 years, and it’s something of an institution. When the ideal evening is spent drinking Pils and eating meat, you have to go here.
Their menu is good local food but try and ask for one of the tables where you can cook your own sausages on a grill.
The brewery is only a 10-minute walk from our hotel apartments.
Address: Bei den Willy-Brandt-Straße 47, 20457 Hamburg, Germany
It’s only 350m (give or take) from our front door to Brauhaus Johann Albrecht. They provide the quintessential German brewery experience, with this being one of only five locations across the country.
When you’re looking for a reliable beer and a solid dinner after a long day, you’ll want to find a seat here. They do great burger and beer deals, with their Messing beer the perfect hoppy accompaniment.
Brauhaus Johann Albrecht is only a five-minute walk away.
Address: Bei den Adolphsbrücke 7, 20457 Hamburg, Germany
A bit further out of the city centre than the other breweries we’re mentioning on this list, Ratsherrn is an entity unto itself with a brewery, micro-brewery, beer yard, craft store, distillery and kitchen all in one place.
You’re spoiled for choice as well when you visit Altes Mädchen (Our Girl), the corner building of the complex. It’s where they have their core range on tap, while also pumping out 60 different craft beers throughout the week.
Oh, and if you’re up early on a Sunday, they open for what they deem a “morning drink” at 10 am.
The easiest way to get there is via the U3 route on the U-Bahn.
Address: Bei den Lagerstraße 30A, 20357 Hamburg, German
Like craft beer? How about pizza and beer together? Then ÜberQuell Brauwerkstätten is the place to be. If you’re a fan of IPAs, they have a core range of three to try and always have at least four seasonal beers to try out.
Address: St. Pauli Fischmarkt 28-31, 20359 Hamburg, Germany
You’ll recognise the iconic label of Paulaner, and this is where the Munich based beer has set up shop in town. Paulaner's Miraculum im Europäischen Hof is mostly a spot for dinner and being able to catch up with friends over a pint or two.
With it being beside Hamburg Train Station, it can get quite busy after work and in the early evening.
Walking will take about 25 minutes. The U-Bahn takes 10 minutes at most.
Address: Kirchenallee 42, 200999 Hamburg, Germany
Combining the traditional beer hall with some unique local brews, Blockbräu is the kind of place you can always bring a crowd and expect to get a seat and a good beer.
On sunny days, patrons tend to head outside so they can drink out on the roof and enjoy the good weather.
Address: Bei den St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken 3, 20359 Hamburg, Germany
