The top 5 places to spend New Year’s Eve 2019/20 in Perth
Raging all-nighter? Family-oriented fun? Quiet night for two? However you plan on spending your New Year’s Eve, Perth has something for you. The beautiful weather, world-class food and wine, striking beaches and cultural attractions characteristic of Western Australia’s capital make it the perfect city for celebrating the arrival of 2020. Here are our picks for the best ways to spend New Year’s Eve in Perth in 2019.
Zoochella at Perth Zoo
Not everyone can experience California’s famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, but Perth has the next best thing. Perth Zoo has announced it will be hosting its first ever “Zoochella” from 3:30pm on December 31 with an abundance of family-friendly fun. Spend the last hours of the decade enjoying music, dancing, light displays, face painting and more throughout the afternoon and evening, as well as the chance to explore the zoo and visit the animals from 3:30 to 6:30pm. DJ Paul will be spinning the decks for the Kids NYE Dance Party at 6:00pm while an interactive dance troupe brings the energy and ensures guests of all ages are having a ball.
The Zoo’s New Year’s Eve countdown is scheduled for the very sensible time of 8:00pm so you can get the little ones to bed or head to an evening event elsewhere in the city. Tickets are on sale now at $35 per person with free entry for kids under two years of age
Cold Chisel At Fremantle Park
Few bands can rival Cold Chisel as the sound of Australian summer. Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Cheap Wine, Choir Girl, Forever Now – for decades these songs have echoed across our backyards, beaches, pubs and bars, earning the band countless accolades including an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Cold Chisel’s unique blend of rock and blues led to a near-fanatical following in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, with their disbanding in ’83 doing little to quell the widespread love for their iconic tracks. Luckily for us, Cold Chisel have reunited once again and will head to Fremantle Park this New Year’s Eve to kick off their 2020 Blood Moon Tour with support from Birds of Tokyo, Jebediah, Carla Geneve, Gyroscope and The Southern River Band. What’s more, the band is likely to perform all-new music alongside its classic hits: check out the new single “Getting the Band Back Together” from their upcoming album Blood Moon
Fremantle Park will be the place to be on New Year’s Eve, so grab your tickets now before it sells out!
Rottnest Island
Boasting the vibe of a remote island getaway without the “remote” caveat, it’s no surprise Rottnest Island is one of Western Australia’s leading attractions and a popular hotspot for New Year’s Eve. Its location just 19 kilometres from the mainland means it’s a comfortable ferry ride from Fremantle and Perth, making it easy to pop over for an unforgettable day trip. You can head over in the evening, but why not leave in the morning and make a day of it? The island’s idyllic climate, world-class beaches and abundance of flora and fauna make it the perfect place to explore before putting on your dancing shoes for the evening festivities.
Specific details of the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations at Thomson Bay are yet to emerge, but rumour has it there’ll be fireworks, entertainment, parties and kids events to enjoy. Keep an eye out on the official website and Facebook page for news and announcements on how Rottnest Island plans to ring in 2020. If you decide to attend, be sure to book your ferries to and from Rottnest Island in advance as limited places will be available – check SeaLink and Rottnest Fast Ferries for return tickets after the midnight countdown.
Origin Fields At Wellington Square
What better way to end one decade and begin the next than with some of the biggest artists from Australia and around the world? Origin Fields will be bringing the noise to Wellington Square with a massive lineup featuring Rüfüs Du Sol and Tyler, The Creator alongside Ella Mai, Jauz, RL Grime, Golden Features, The Veronicas, What So Not and plenty more.
Festivities will begin on December 31 from 3:00pm to 1:00am before resuming on January 1 from 3:00pm to 11:00pm. The full lineup is yet to be announced, so check the official website or Facebook event to see who else will be joining an already impressive list of artists. Tickets on sale now.
The CBD – Perth Cultural Centre And Yagan Square
As always, the City of Perth will be throwing a classic New Year’s Eve bash in the centre of town free of charge and open to all ages. Three stages across Yagan Square and the neighbouring Perth Cultural Centre will feature everything from live music, improv comedy and kids shows to magicians, circus acts and fire displays.
An early countdown and fireworks display at 9pm is perfect for families with young children while the official midnight celebration is guaranteed to impress the adults. The free entertainment on offer across the three stages will be joined by an amusement zone in Yagan Square where revellers can enjoy cheap rides and games.
