Opened on January 21, 2018, Optus Stadium is the newest first-class arena in Australia and a new contender for the country’s finest. State Of Origin

The annual State of Origin rugby league series between New South Wales and Queensland is one of the greatest sporting rivalries in Australia -- and it’s heading west for the first time in history. A battle that was traditionally fought in the competing states alone has made a habit of expanding beyond the northeastern part of the country in recent years to expand interest in the league and provide neutral territory for one of the three games, which is only good news for Western Australia.

Game Two of the 2019 State of Origin series is scheduled for June 23 with kick-off at 5:40pm and is certain to be one of Perth’s biggest sporting events of the year. Locals and travelling fans alike will pack into the beautiful Optus Stadium to show their support for the Blues or the Maroons, with the opportunity to see the winner of Game One in Brisbane make it back-to-back victories and thus claim the series in Perth. Should the match result in the series tying at one win apiece, State of Origin will head to Sydney for a deciding Game Three.

But while the short-term focus will be on the 2018/19 finals, football fans in Perth are also preparing for two blockbuster friendlies to be played at Optus Stadium in the upcoming offseason.

Manchester United, one of the richest and most successful clubs in the world, will take on the Glory in an exhibition match on Saturday July 13, giving Australians a chance to witness some of the best players on the planet take on one of the most talented squads in Australia. Fellow English powerhouses Leeds United will also be travelling to Perth to take on Manchester United on Wednesday July 17 to make it two unmissable fixtures in one week. 

Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Fred, Romelu Lukaku, David de Gea, Juan Mata, Fred and Anthony Martial are just some of the world-renowned names fans will hope to see line up for the Red Devils, while Patrick Bamford and Jack Clarke are among the stars Perth may see in action for Leeds. Bledisloe Cup

When we said State of Origin is one of the great sporting rivalries, it’s fair to say the Bledisloe Cup between the Wallabies and the All Blacks is an even more significant contest and on par with the Ashes as Australia’s longest and most important rivalry. Steeped in history and heartache, this rugby union series holds a special place in Australian sport -- even if the Kiwis have held the trophy every year since 2002.

The Wallabies and the All Blacks will meet at 12.30pm on Friday, August 9 at Optus Stadium for the first match of the 2019 series, with Australia likely needing a victory to have a chance at reclaiming the title in the second and final match in Auckland one week later on Saturday August 17.

It’s the first time the Bledisloe Cup will be contested in Perth and the only time the sides will meet on Australian soil in 2019, so you can expect this match to sell out before the gates are opened on the day.
